The Weather Channel is part of Landmark, a privately held worldwide communications business headquartered in Atlanta, GA. The Weather Channel was chosen by Landmark in place of the news channel despite having a business plan to establish one in the late 1970s. Two years after CNN News began airing, in May 1982, The Weather Channel was introduced. Since then, it has developed into a significant source of weather data in the United States. More than 89 million cable households (with nearly complete coverage) and more than 4 million Latin American subscribers are currently served by The Weather Channel in the United States.
